Weekly Shonen Jump continues its manga shuffle, with many series coming to a close and many more series kicking off. Today, we’re taking a look at the new paranormal adventure Kaedegami, from Jun Harukawa. What happens when a demon raises a human boy? What does she really want from him? Join us as we find out!
Ancient Stories
Kaedegami weaves legends of fearsome demonic beings named Shenguai. These beings allegedly prey on humans, but an orphaned boy named Kou is living quite happily with one! A masked Shenguai named Chiyou has looked after Kou all his life. Kou laughs off the locals’ stories, believing that his lovely benefactor is nothing but benevolent. But before long, her true reasons for raising him will become evident.
… or will they? Because on the one hand, Chiyou is absolutely a demonic being. But on the other, she’s done the one thing you never do in situations like these: she got attached.
Possession
You see, Chiyou has a problem. Long ago, long before the events of Kaedegami, she suffered a defeat so absolutely that she lost her entire body. In order to exact revenge and fight to regain her body, she would need a vessel. And, at least at first, that was why she looked after Kou. But rather than following through on her plan, she chooses to let him go.
But just as he’s become dear to her, she’s become dear to him. Kou promises to help Chiyou fight to regain herself, starting with her face. So she does ultimately get what she wanted from Kou—but this time, it’s an agreement rather than subjugation. And so, the two set out together, determined to put Chiyou back together one piece at a time.
A Beautiful Adventure
First things first… Kaedegami is utterly gorgeous. The first chapter in particular has some stunning panels, including our first look at Chiyou’s actual face. The care shown between the main cast—the young human and the monster who raised him—is also extremely compelling. The two have a surprisingly sweet relationship, and we’re hoping this new manga has plenty of time to explore it.
The fights are important too, of course! Within two chapters, this series has already shown us two action-packed fight scenes. Together, Chiyou and Kou aren’t just getting revenge; they’re also helping the humans around them and making the world a better place. There are so many opportunities for worldbuilding, new characters, and character development. So our fingers are crossed that this series has a long life in Weekly Shonen Jump.
Kaedegami is now available to read from Viz Media.
