Forget whatever New Year’s Eve plans you have on your plate, because December 31st, in a perfect world, would be spent trying to peep a broadcast of the bout of the century. Hosted by the Japanese organizing body of K-1 and DREAM style mixed martial arts, the transition into 2009 will be highlighted by a match between the mighty Bob Sapp and manga legend Kinnikuman.
Those of you into fictional characters of a less muscly variety just need to know that Kinniku Mantaro is the lead character in Takashi Shimada and Yoshinori Nakai’s manga, Kinnikuman Nisei Second Generations, and has come to our shores in many forms. Those at roughly my age will no doubt fondly recall M.U.S.C.L.E. toys, while everyone else may have seen Kinniku Mantaro on Saturday mornings or on their local store’s manga shelves in Ultimate Muscle.
Either way, Kinnikuman, who will be played by seven-time All-Japan Wrestling Championship winner Akihiko Tanaka, is going to be throwing down in the real world against Sapp, and if that isn’t something to be truly merry about, I don’t know what is.
