Have you ever gotten a figure that was so off-base from what you thought you were purchasing that you joined a petition to demand replacements? Figure likenesses are usually pretty decent, but this is exactly what happened with the release of a new Attack on Titan figure based on fan-favorite character Levi.
The limited edition figure had fans ordering based on prototype designs—all as part of a collaboration between Attack on Titan and mobile phone company Docomo—and the best they could do was hope the final product would match what was promised in the promotional art. The results started appearing in the mailboxes of buyers in the past week or so, and they ended up far worse than one would have imagined.
The fact that Levi came through scuffed, scratched, snapped, and damaged in other ways in some cases was just a part of the problem. As you can see in the photo above, his face doesn’t quite line up with the well-known and beloved design of the character.
Here’s another look at him:
購入権が当選した進撃の巨人×docomoコラボのリヴァイ兵長フィギュアが届きました👏ん~正直1万5千でこのクオリティなのかなって思ってしまった。でも破損した状態で届いた方もいらっしゃるようなので、マシな方なのかな?よく見ると台座に小さなキズやエフェクトに黒い汚れ、お顔も…これは許容範囲? pic.twitter.com/6tzVR0X5U3

Considering the fact that Levi was only available to purchase for those who won a lottery, and he was priced at ¥13,000 (about US$119), it’s no surprise that fans are petitioning for full remakes. Docomo issued an apology and is currently offering to replace the damaged figures and allowing those who are dissatisfied to return theirs for a full refund, but fans want more.
The Change.org petition is asking Docomo to redo the figures and deliver on their original promise, so we’ll have to wait and see if anything comes of it.
