For most of us, anime music is already pretty magical. A certain opening theme or piece of BGM can bring a whole slew of emotions. But this season, music is making literal magic all across the anime landscape! With shows like Princession Orchestra and many more premiering, tuneful miracles are happening everywhere.
Today, we’re taking a look at three song-centric series you can watch as they stream in Japan. From magical girls to idol boys, the hits keep on coming. Which will you be following this season?
You and Idol Precure
Leading off the magical anime music scene this season is, of course, You and Idol Precure. The latest installment in the long-running franchise takes its cue from idol fandom. Cure Idol, Cure Wink, and Cure Kyun-Kyun save their town from monsters with the power of song, dance, and crowd-pleasing. But they’re also working idols with a very real fan base!
Each Cure’s final attack takes the form of her own unique track, complete with staging. And these three tunes have also become their hit singles outside of their weekly battles. So even when they’re not in combat, their songs are boosting the spirits of their fans.
You and Idol Precure is now streaming on Crunchyroll.
Classic★Stars
Anime music is full of classical influences, but Classic★Stars takes it to the next level. Our four leads are Beethoven, Mozart, Liszt, and Chopin… but not really. Rather, they’re four modern-day boys compatible with the “gifts” of their respective composers. In this alternate world, big feelings can power big visions—called Emosion—with the help of a super-secret machine under Gloria Private Academy. This turns the songs of our heroes into living music videos. Through these Emosions, they can convey powerful feelings in very tangible ways.
Each new song in the series is based on an existing classical piece by the singer’s namesake. Tunes based on “Für Elise,” “Eine Kliene Nachtmusik,” and (of course) Beethoven’s Fifth have already featured. Paired with their performer’s Emosion, they can get a bit unserious. (Mozart, for instance, absolutely floored an ice skater with penguins and polar bears.) But as wacky as these moments get, it’s implied that this could be the future of conflict resolution.
Classic★Stars is now streaming on Crunchyroll.
Maebashi Witches
You and Idol Precure and Princession Orchestra aren’t the only musical magical girl series this season! There’s also Maebashi Witches: an original series that feels more like a classic 80s magical girl anime than a modern monster-fighter. Our five heroines gather in their hometown to open a flower shop where wishes are granted. And it just so happens that music is the best way to cast spells. When these girls’ hearts are united, they can sing a song that gets straight to the heart of their customer’s concerns.
Of course, any group where a member isn’t fully on board is going to be out of tune. And as this series is kicking off, there’s already a breakdown in the ranks. Will the Maebashi Witches be able to unite their hearts to help the locals? We hope so—because the magical, musical visuals of this series are already fantastic.
