Studio Ghibli is “Open, But Not Working on Anything”

We reported last week on Studio Ghibli’s possible not un-death, in which esteemed Ghibli director and co-founder Isao Takahata (Princess Kaguya) asserted his desire to continue creating making films while also suggesting that Hayao Miyazaki wasn’t done yet, either. This week, we’ve got some more news on the subject, this time from Ghibli’s former co-founder and producer Toshio Suzuki, and the word is… increasingly unclear.

While speaking on a talk show recently, Suzuki revealed that Studio Ghibli is “open, but inactive. We’re having a hard time deciding what to make next.”

Suzuki continued, saying “when you think about the state of the world right now, it gets hard to think about what to make. It starts to make me think again about how movies are things we primarily experience not by making them but by watching them. That’s the fun part. Watching movies and talking about them. But the more I think about that the sooner this feeling of ‘what are you doing?!’ comes over me and I start to worry about what we’re going to make next again. Maybe there’s something in my surroundings I can draw from for a theme.”

Whatever Ghibli ends up deciding on, they’re not done yet. And boy, I hope we don’t have to report the opposite for the next article.
