It’s not really even a movie, but Gundam GQuuuuuuX Beginning won at the Japanese box office this weekend.
Beginning, which is essentially the first few episodes of the upcoming series Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX cut into one 81-minute feature for theaters, took 599 million yen over the weekend. That’s 114% more than Actual Motion Picture Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway made in its opening weekend. The hype is real.
The series, which is pronounced “gee quacks” centers around a high schooler named Amate who lives on a space colony and gets involved in an illegal mobile suit sport called Clan Battle. It features scripts co-written by Hideaki Anno and Yoji Enokido (Bungo Stray Dogs), and is directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki (FLCL).
Beginning features a theme song by Kenshi Yonezu.
The series stars:
Tomoyo Kurosawa as Amate Yuzuriha
Yui Ishikawa as Nyaan
Shimba Tsuchiya as Shūji Itō
Character designs are credited to take (Pokemon conceptual character artist), while mechanical designs are by Ikuto Yamashita (Evangelion).
Here’s the official description from the website:
Amate Yuzuriha is a high-school student living peacefully in a space colony floating in outer space. When she meets a war refugee named Nyaan, Amate is drawn into the illegal mobile suit dueling sport known as Clan Battle. Under the entry name “Machu,” she throws herself into fierce battle day after day, piloting the GQuuuuuuX. Then an unidentified Gundam mobile suit pursued by both the space force and the police appears before her, along with its pilot, a boy named Shuji.
