Yoko Kamio’s Boys Over Flowers manga, AKA Hana Yori Dango, just received some impressive accolades. The Guinness World Records has officially recognized the series—which ran in Shueisha’s Margaret manga magazine from October 1992 to January 2004 for a total of 37 collected volumes—under the distinction of “the most published copies of a shojo manga series written by a single author.”
Over the years, the Boys Over Flowers manga has been adapted in many forms, from anime to live-action films and dramas to stage plays.
Yoko Kamio shared the following message in response:
I am very happy to have made it into the Guinness World Records in this milestone year of the 30th anniversary since the the launch of Boys Over Flowers. I believe this record is made possible by the support of so many readers. Thank you very much. And my first original art exhibition will be held from April. Please come and meet Tsukushi and F4!
VIZ Media publishes the Boys Over Flowers manga in English and describes it:
Tsukushi Makino is accepted into the prestigious, Eitoku Academy. Life changes dramatically for Tsukushi when her friend falls on Tsukasa Domyoji. Tsukasa is the explosive leader of the “F4,” a group of the most powerful, rich and handsome boys. Domyoji refuses to accept Makiko’s apology and Tsukushi steps in to protect her friend. A red tag appears in the Tsukushi’s locker the next morning which is a sign from the F4 that she is to be bullied by the school. Tskushi continues to stand up to her oppressors.
