The second of three Mononoke anime films, Mononoke the Movie: The Ashes of Rage, opened in Japan on March 14, and now it has a date with Netflix. The streamer announced its upcoming summer slate earlier this week, lining up the new film for an August 14 debut on the service.
The third film will follow in spring 2026 to close out the trilogy.
The first entry, Mononoke the Movie: The Phantom in the Rain, is currently available to stream on Netflix. You can see an earlier trailer for that one below while we wait for the sequel to stream.
Kenji Nakamura is directing the anime films, with Twin Engine producing. Following a delay that moved it out of last year, Mononoke the Movie: Karakasa opened in Japan on July 26, 2024.
This follows the 12-episode Mononoke TV anime, which itself is a spinoff of the Ayakashi – Samurai Horror Tales anime. The series is available to stream on The Roku Channnel, Netflix and Crunchyroll, which describes it like so:
Mononoke Plot
In feudal Japan, evil spirits known as mononoke plague both households and the countryside. Only one person has the power to kill them where they stand: the Medicine Seller. But in order to draw his spirit-slaying sword he must first understand the Form, Truth, and Reason of the mononoke. Armed with sharp wit, he wanders from place to place striking down the evil spirits in his wake.
