Following a recent tease, the official TOHO animation social accounts revealed plans for an anime adaptation of The Darwin Incident, an award-winning manga by Shun Umezawa. We don’t know who is involved in the production just yet, but we do have a “super teaser” visual that puts leads Charlie and Lucy in the spotlight.

The series first kicked off in Monthly Afternoon magazine in June 2020, and has since been collected in seven volumes. Awards include the 15th Manga Taisho award, a Japan Media Arts Festival Excellence Award, France’s Asia de la Critique award and more.

The manga is available in English through Kodansha USA, which describes the story like so:

The Animal Liberation Alliance, an eco-terrorist organization, rescues a pregnant chimpanzee from an animal testing lab-only for it to give birth to a half-human, half-chimpanzee “humanzee” named Charlie! Fifteen years later, Charlie’s human foster parents are finally ready to send him to a normal high school, where he makes his first friend: a human girl named Lucy. In the meantime, however, the ALA’s stance has become ever more extreme, and now they’re here to drag Charlie into their terrorist plot…
